This red chutney pairs well with dosa and is my daughter’s all time favourite chutney. She always volunteers to make this quick and delicious chutney. All you need is some tomato, onion, ginger, garlic, kashmiri chillies, urad dal and channa dal!
Ingredients
- 1 large onion sliced
- 2 medium tomatoes sliced
- 2 tbsp chana dal (bengal gram)
- 1 tbsp urad dal
- 3 Kashmiri chilies
- 1 inch ginger roughly chopped
- 3 garlic cloves roughly chopped
Instructions
- Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan on medium flame
- Add Chana dal and fry for 30 seconds then add urad dal and fry for another 30 seconds or until the chana dal turns light brown (Make sure not to burn). Remove and keep aside to cool
- In the same pan, add little more oil if required, then fry chillies until they swell up. Remove and cool
- In the same pan, add little more oil if required, then add onions and fry until translucent. Then add ginger, garlic and fry for 2 minutes or until onions start to become almost brown. Then add tomatoes, little salt and fry until they are mashed and almost dry
- Cool everything before grinding
- In the mixer, first add the chana and urad dal and grind coarsely. Remove and keep aside
- Then add chillies, onion-tomato mixture, 1/4 cup water to the mixer and grind to a fine paste. Then add the coarse ground dal and grind for 30-40 seconds
- Remove and serve with all dosas, crispy dosas, idlies, vadas.
