Dal & rice is a classic Indian food combination. Over the years I’ve learned to make a few different styles of dal. This quick & simple dal is one of them.
Ingredients
- 1 cup masoor dal (red lentil)
- 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
- 3 tbsp Tomato puree
- 4-5 green chilies slit
- 1/2 turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- Coriander leaves for garnish
For Temper
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/4 tsp asafoetida
- 10-12 curry leaves
- 6-7 garlic cloves crushed
- 3-4 dry red chillies broken into 2
Instructions
- Wash dal & add it to a pressure cooker. Add ginger garlic paste, tomato puree, green chillies & 4 cups water. Pressure cook for 3 whistles
- Once pressure is released, open & add 1 cup water, turmeric powder, salt & mix.
- After 1 boil cover & cook on medium flame for 4- 5 minutes then add coriander leaves.
- Adjust water, spice & salt accordingly. Remove from heat & temper
To temper
- Heat 2-3 tbsp oil, add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add cumin seeds, asafoetida, red chilies & stir.
- Add curry leaves & garlic. When garlic is brown add to the dal, mix & serve.
