Dal & rice is a classic Indian food combination. Over the years I’ve learned to make a few different styles of dal. This quick & simple dal is one of them.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup masoor dal (red lentil)
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • 3 tbsp Tomato puree
  • 4-5 green chilies slit
  •  1/2 turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Coriander leaves for garnish
For Temper
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  •  1/4 tsp asafoetida
  • 10-12 curry leaves
  • 6-7 garlic cloves crushed
  • 3-4 dry red chillies broken into 2

Instructions

  1. Wash dal & add it to a pressure cooker. Add ginger garlic paste, tomato puree, green chillies & 4 cups water. Pressure cook for 3 whistles
  2. Once pressure is released, open & add 1 cup water, turmeric powder, salt & mix.
  3. After 1 boil cover & cook on medium flame for 4- 5 minutes then add coriander leaves.
  4. Adjust water, spice & salt accordingly. Remove from heat & temper
To temper
  1. Heat 2-3 tbsp oil, add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add cumin seeds, asafoetida, red chilies & stir.
  2. Add curry leaves & garlic. When garlic is brown add to the dal, mix & serve.
